Galectin-3
An inflammatory protein inside the brain
Transcriptomic studies strongly support the role of galectin-3 as an important molecule in neuroinflammation. Recently, our group demonstrated the key role of galectin-3 in Alzheimer’s disease pathology.
Microglial function depends on the expression of inflammatory proteins. Transcriptomic studies strongly support the role of galectin-3 as an important molecule in neuroinflammation. Galectin-3 is a lectin with inflammatory properties but is also involved in homeostatic functions such as cell adhesion, proliferation, and vesicle transport.
We study the neuroinflammatory role of galectin-3, both in the humans and in mouse models. Recently, our group demonstrated the key role of galectin-3 in Alzheimer’s disease pathology. Additionally, we investigate the potential of galectin-3 as a prognostic biomarker for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, our group also explores the possibility of using galectin-3 as a therapeutic target.
